About this Program
IGNOU's Master of Fine Arts in Painting (MFA — ODL) is a two-year postgraduate programme from Indira Gandhi National Open University delivered in open-and-distance-learning mode, designed for graduates with a background in fine arts, visual arts, or applied arts who want to deepen their studio practice and art theory knowledge without attending a full-time campus programme. One of the few government-priced postgraduate fine arts degrees available in India, the programme covers advanced painting techniques across mediums (oil, watercolour, acrylic, mixed media), art history and criticism, aesthetics, visual culture, and independent studio project development. IGNOU's ODL structure uses printed study packs, practical workshop contact sessions at regional centres, and online assessment submissions. Eligibility and fees are on the IGNOU Samarth portal. Graduates pursue careers as practising artists, art educators, gallery curators, art directors in media and advertising, and fine arts faculty at school and college level, or continue to PhD fine arts programmes.
